Cocoa Imports

The imports totaled 3.7M tonnes in 2017, increasing by 13% against the previous year figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations over the period under review. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2011, when import increased by 16% against the previous year level. Global import peaked in 2017, and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, cocoa imports amounted to $9.3B in 2017. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the period from 2007 to 2017; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Global import peaked of $11B in 2011; however, from 2012 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.

Cocoa Imports By Country

In 2017, the Netherlands (939K tonnes), distantly followed by the U.S. (470K tonnes), Germany (354K tonnes), Belgium (320K tonnes), and Malaysia (312K tonnes) were the largest importers of cocoa (beans), together achieving 65% of total imports. France (142K tonnes), Spain (124K tonnes), the UK (107K tonnes), Turkey (103K tonnes), Italy (100K tonnes), Singapore (84K tonnes), and Indonesia (69K tonnes) held the minor share of total imports.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of imports, among the main importing countries, was attained by Indonesia (+13.4% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($2.3B), the U.S. ($1.2B), and Germany ($952M) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2017, together comprising 48% of global imports. Belgium, Malaysia, France, Spain, Italy, Turkey, the UK, Indonesia and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Indonesia (+18.8% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of imports, in terms of the main importing countries, over the last 10 year period, while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Cocoa Import Prices By Country

In 2017, the average import price for cocoa (beans) amounted to $2,541 per tonne, falling by -19.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2007 to 2017 it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2008, when import increased by 27% from the previous year level. Over the period under review, average import price for cocoa attained its maximum level of $3,219 per tonne in 2010; however, from 2011 to 2017, it failed to regain its strength.

Average import prices varied somewhat amongst major importing countries. In 2017, major importing countries recorded the following import prices: in Indonesia ($3,170 per tonne) and Italy ($2,976 per tonne), while Singapore ($2,161 per tonne) and Malaysia ($2,228 per tonne) were among the lowest.

From 2007 to 2017, the most notable growth rate of import prices was attained by Indonesia (+4.7% per year), while the other global leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
