1. The Needs Improvement of Surgical Masks 

A medical mask is designed to prevent infection by filtering bacteria, drops, and sol air from entering the user’s mouth and nose. However, with this design, there exist limitations that bring the risk of cross-contamination of infectious viruses on the surface of surgical masks. The question here is whether the mask can filter the virus? The current standard respirator includes the N95 standard and medical respirator that has been tested to filter 95% particles approximately 0.3 microns in diameter thanks to its electrostatic properties that trap dirt and dust, bacteria with a diameter of about 1 micron. Meanwhile, the size of the most interesting virus strain now is Coronavirus with a smaller size of about 0.05 – 0.2 micron [1].

On the other hand, experts warn users not to touch the mask’s surface and thus spread germs to other surfaces. Since the filtered pathogenic microorganisms trapped on the surface of the mask do not die, they are still alive and growing. According to research, Coronavirus can last up to 7 days on disposable surgical masks [2]. According Guideline for Disinfection and Sterilization in Healthcare Facilities (2008) – CDC: Non-enveloped viruses are more resistant to changes in temperature, pH, and some disinfectants than are enveloped viruses [3]. Coronavirus and its variants, are enveloped viruses, and for this reason they have the same sensitivity to disinfectants. If some of them produce more human pathology than others (like SARS-Cov-2), it is because they interact with host cell receptors differently.

3. WAKAMONO Surgical Mask – A Standard One

4. Wakamono Surgical Mask – Certified Biosafety

The surgical mask using Nano Biotechnology contains biocide organic and natural components. It is certificated safe (Biosafety) according to Tests for in vitro cytotoxicity ANSI/AAMI/ISO 10993-5:2009 by Pacific Labs (USA). WAKAMONO medical masks do not apply metal nanoparticles in masks.

Why does WAKAMONO not use nano-metal particles?

Due to these old technologies (nanosilver, nanocopper, nanotitanium, etc.) have the potential to affect human health that has been discussed by the European Commission about their safety, less friendly to the environment and user friendly [4]. Examples of nanotechnology silver using compounds AgNPs, while having light AgNPs releasing silver ions (Ag+) in order to break the structure and loss of function of organs in cells lead to cell damage [5]. According to the study, silver ions concentration increases to 100 µg/mL, the cell viability decreases to 74.5% [6].

In addition, another weakness, AgNPs are rapidly converted to more stable form in certain condition, which reduces the particles’ ability to release silver ions and kill bacteria [7].
