Rotary Clubs in Mumbai continue to save lives with ALSC Ambulance
Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-City, RID 3141 completes the project (under GG2347521) in record time.

Rotary Club of Bombay Mid-City Rotary International District 3141 in support with fellow Rotary Clubs donated an Advanced Life Support Cardiac Ambulance for Critical Illness to Bharatratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, (Central Railway) Byculla, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. The formal Handing over ceremony was held on the Hospital campus amongst the august gathering comprising of members from Rotary Clubs, Hospital Staff and Central Railway officials on June 01,2023.

They say dreams come to reality when shared with like minded people. That’s what has happened here. Rtn. Ramesh Jain, Past President from RC Bombay Mid-City was always keen to work on this project ever since the pandemic days of Covid in our City. The conversations shaped up with the demand arising from a recently renovated and one of the finest Govt. operated hospitals in Mumbai – Bharatratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Byculla which is managed by the Central Railway department from Indian Railways. After multiple surveys and assessments, his current year club President Rtn. Kunjjaan Popat and the team of Rotarians, were convinced to go ahead with this project.

In case of Cardiac Emergencies, the ‘Golden Hour’ is very crucial for saving human life. Just transportation of a cardiac patient in an ordinary ambulance at times proves very costly w.r.t the treatment outcome. However, probabilities of saving many lives of patients becomes higher with a well-equipped state-of-the-art ambulance.

With the total budget coming to USD 34,650/- Ramesh’s Co-President Rtn. Bharat Jhunjhunwala from RC Mumbai West End was approached to assist with the funding, who without hesitation spoke internally with his current year club President Dr. Abhay Aggarwal and his father Rtn. Niranjan Jhunjhunwala reverting with a consent to go ahead with 50% of the funding. In order to make this a Global Grant, Rotary Club of Nagarjun, RID 3292 came on board as the International Partner. The balance funding was completed by the members of RC Bombay Mid-City, RC Mumbai Elegant and Rtn. Darshan Chadda from his family Charity (Lakshmi Devi Dev Raj Trust) a member from RC Mumbai Downtown Sealand.

The ambulance handover ceremony was graced by the Rotary District 3141 Governor 2022 – 2023 Sandip Agarwalla and Shri Alok Singh, Additional General Manager, Central Railway. Additionally, Family members of our Principal Donor ‘Purshottamdas Fatehchand Charity Trust’, Rotarians from donor clubs, some of the District Officials – Past District Governor Harjit Talwar, Dr. Indumati Gopinathan, Deepak Jaindani, Ramon Abrol, Rohan Dalmia, Hemang Jangla, Samapti Patel, DRM/BB Mr Rajnish Goyal along with the officials from the hospital and Central Railway were present to enhance the moment of Joy and Satisfaction.

Project Coordinator Ramesh Jain sharing his happiness on this occasion mentioned, “The project was executed within a record span of 100 days including all approvals and formalities. This was not possible without the support from the Rotary Foundation team from district and International.”

District Governor 2022-23 Sandip Agarwalla said, “While walking through the hospital it has never appeared to be a Public Hospital from any angle whatsoever. I am glad that the donation will be in safe hands and managed well. This association with Rotary Clubs will surely add many more projects here.”

A Satisfied Club President Rtn. Kunjjaan Popat mentioned, “As a President, always wanted to do meaningful and impactful projects, I am glad that we could execute this and seeing the happiness in the eyes of the hospital team, we know we have done the right thing.”

Shri. Alok Singh, Additional General Manager, Central Railway expressed his pleasure to be part of this great moment when two great organisations committed for human welfare are joining hands for the benefit of Railway population. He further appreciated the vision of Hospital Administration and that of Rotarians to have very thoughtfully planned such a value addition in the form of a sophisticated Cardiac Ambulance.

Dr Meera Arora, Principal PCMD thanked the Rotary Club for the generous donation for such a noble cause and promised to offer all the support for strengthening the collaboration for years ahead and Dr. Deepak Dalmia rightly compared such an ambulance with a Mobile ICU.
